QED Records
Philippines Launches its First Netlabel, QED Records
QED Records, like the other netlabels on the web, offers free downloads of entire albums of mp3 music by the artists on its roster, all this and printable album covers too. It veers more closely to the traditional record label structure: on its website, there is a catalog of releases, a roster of artists, a newsletter.
(PRWEB) August 15, 2004 -- When you think of the Philippines, you will usually picture white sand beaches, Imelda Marcos' shoe collection, maybe even the recent Iraq hostage situation with Angelo dela Cruz. These are the things which immediately come to mind. What you won't normally connect with the country is dance music. Which is precisely what a tiny one-man Internet based record label is trying to change.
The netlabel is called QED Records (http://qed.acid42.bluechronicles.net). It is housed in the middle of bustling Marikina City, in eastern Metro Manila. It is also technically housed in the laptop hard drive of its founder, Lionel Valdellon, himself an electronic musician who found an alternate way to distribute his music via the netlabel.
"I love free music," says Valdellon. "I love peer-to-peer networks and mp3s and the entire digital music mess that came with the internet. QED Records is my way of offering the electronic music of the Philippines back to the large community of netlabels around the world. it is also my way of promoting the electronic dance music of the Philippines to the world."
QED Records, like the other netlabels on the web, offers free downloads of entire albums of mp3 music by the artists on its roster, all this and printable album covers too. It's a slight change from the more common I-have-mp3s-of-my-band-on-my-home-page model, since it veers more closely to the traditional record label structure: on its website, there is a catalog of releases, a roster of artists, a newsletter.
"The only thing missing is the big bucks," says Valdellon. And the reason for that is that all the music is free. No one pays Philippine electronic musicians to sign up for QED, and no one makes money off the mp3s available on its netlabel.
Thus far, QED offers 6 releases by artists such as Acid42 (Valdellon's solo projects), Clone (Valdellon's house/downtempo trio), Paper Scratcher, Emorej, and coming soon, Mic Freak, First Degree, Scorphius and Sick Man Of Asia.
"There is a growing scene of electronica-makers here in Manila," says Valdellon. "Unfortunately there isn't much of a scene for live electronica performances, but that is a different story. I have made it QED's mission to offer up some of the best independently recorded electronic music that the Philippines has to offer."
