Embrace file-sharing, music industry told
Notable technology journalist Andrew Orlowski has told the music industry to stop imitating King Canute commanding back the waves and accept and embrace file-sharing.
Mr. Orlowski was speaking at Interactive at In The City, a conference for the music industry that was part of the broader In The City music convention that tool place over the last few days in Manchester.
Invited as the conference's keynote speaker, the Register journalist said that the DRM attempts of record companies and even legitimate music download shops such as iTunes or Napster are ultimately doomed. Coming technology advances will make attempts to counter piracy increasingly difficult and the companies should look to other solutions in order to survive.
Mr. Orlowski recommended in particular, according to a BBC report on his speech, that the music industry push for a "tax" to be applied on top of internet subscriptions, with the fees collected being distributed amongst artists in a similar fashion to the way radio royalty fees are distributed.
