Apple iTunes Ignores Indies
Independent musicians and labels have had just about enough of iTunes after being made to wait to join its download list. When iTunes first launched, the Association of Independent Musicians, which represents various independent record labels, protested that its members had been neglected.
Months later, some labels were signed to iTunes but have yet to see their catalogue appear. Others have started talks, but have not yet seen any contracts. The majority, however, have seen zero interest from Apple at all.
Indie labels Domino and Ninja Tune both signed licences with Apple but haven't heard from the online music store since. Meanwhile, others haven't come close to licensing paperwork, despite repeated offers from record labels.
While Apple and the independents try to resolve their differences, some of the best-selling bands remain unavailable for downloading. Bands like this year's Mercury Prize winners Franz Ferdinand, as well as the UK's current number one Eric Prydz, are nowhere to found in the online store because of their indie leanings. Other old favorites including Billy Bragg, Elvis Costello and T-Rex have also yet to turn up on iTunes.
